A Father Taken Away

The Arrest
A broken household
Robert “Skeet” Douglas is arrested after Charlene Moore and Estella Moore are killed. Seven-year-old Robert DeShaun Peace loses the father who had taught him homework, toughness, and social confidence.
Public certainty
The prosecution relies on Georgianna Broadway’s identification, the Taurus Spesco .38-caliber revolver, and a rapidly solidifying narrative of guilt.
Private uncertainty
Jackie Peace tries to preserve her son’s belief in his father while hiding the violence and legal danger surrounding the case.
The Trial Delay

Justice in Slow Motion
Representation denied
The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender initially refuses to represent Robert “Skeet” Douglas because of disputed property and financial claims.
Lost preparation
For nearly a year, he fights for counsel instead of building a defense. Irving Gaskins dies before his account of the arrest can be formally presented.
Conviction
State of New Jersey v. Robert Douglas ends in murder convictions and a life sentence. The delay becomes part of the later legal argument and part of Robert’s inherited grievance.
The Son as Advocate

Fighting from the Outside
Legal apprenticeship
Robert DeShaun Peace studies murder appeals in the Essex County law library and builds arguments his father’s defense team never developed.
Temporary freedom
His postconviction petition succeeds in 1997, allowing Robert “Skeet” Douglas to leave prison briefly before the State’s appeal returns him to custody.
Final defeat
Robert continues researching until the last appeal fails in August 2006. Skeet dies soon afterward, leaving the son with both a legal loss and a permanent emotional vacancy.
